Your Fascia and Myofascial Release

Your fascial system is like a three-dimensional web––one system that surrounds and permeates every structure in your body, down to the cellular level. A healthy, unrestricted fascial system will glide and move freely within your body, allowing everything else to move freely and be supported. When you experience trauma of any kind, whether from a physical injury, illness or emotional stress, the gliding system becomes less fluid, more solidified. This leads to restrictions that prevent the fascial system from moving and flowing freely. When you have stuck fibers and hardened fluid in the system, they can cause significant crushing pressure on whatever structure they are surrounding.

Myofascial restrictions do not currently show up on any standard medical tests and can greatly impact your overall health. The restrictions can affect the functionality of your entire body, from your nervous system to your immune system, causing pain, illness, brain fog, headaches and more.

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe, gentle and highly effective technique, often providing significant relief and healing. The benefits of MFR alone can be profound and far-reaching. If you're currently receiving other forms of therapy, MFR will enhance these by opening up your system and allowing it to be more receptive.

The John Barnes method of working with the fascia is well-established and has brought many people long-lasting healing and pain relief. MFR is not based on any form of fascial work that involves painfully forcing your body to do something. MFR techniques are slow, gentle, subtle and held over time, allowing the restrictions to melt and release when you're ready for them to. This time factor also allows your body to move into past positions in space, where old traumas can be released, only when you are ready to do so.

CHRONIC CONDITIONS

MFR can help improve systemic conditions like fibromyalgia, CFS, and others, as well as address chronic pain and injuries. Releasing fascial restrictions relieves pressure on structures––such as blood vessels, nerves, muscles, organs, bones––which then enhances your bodily functions overall. They are freed to work more efficiently.

If you've had painful experiences with bodywork (and have felt awful afterwards) or have been diagnosed with seemingly unrelated or chronic conditions, or if your issues remain unidentified and troublesome, myofascial release could be right for you. In our session, you as a whole person will be treated and respected. You and I will work in partnership. You will be in control of your session and will never be forced into pain. Your nervous system has experienced plenty of stress already. MFR is meant to help free you from this, which means keeping your nervous system out of a protective, bracing response and away from additional pain.

MY BACKGROUND

I'm an expert* MFR therapist with 581 hours of John Barnes MFR training and have taken all available MFR Seminars; including Pediatrics, Equine MFR, and two Skill Enhancement Seminars. I'm committed to regularly attending the seminars in order to deepen and expand my knowledge and skills, as well as to learning from everyone I treat.

*Note: The term "expert" is used in accordance with the classifications established by MFR Seminars: beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert. A therapist's level is based on which seminars have been completed and repeated and how long the therapist has been specializing in MFR.

I'm a graduate of the Lauterstein-Conway Massage School and its Advanced Program, which included certifications in orthopedic massage and in the Lauterstein Method of Deep Massage. Past education includes a BA in Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin, 1989.

My passion and commitment to MFR stem from my own experience with long-term chronic illness, the wonderfully far-reaching benefits I've experienced from regularly receiving MFR, and my desire to help others free up their body and reconnect––or more deeply connect––to their own healing power.

YOUR SESSION

Please wear loose, elastic-band shorts and a jogging bra or tank top (for women). A two-piece bathing suit will also work. Please don't apply any body lotion beforehand. I will be applying gentle but firm and sustained pressure with both of my hands and need not to slide over your skin as I stretch the fascia.

When we work together, I'll teach you self-treatment techniques so you will be more empowered to engage with your own healing and can further your progress.
